Cleaning Silver with Baking Soda and White Vinegar

How to clean silverware.

Don’t wait until the last minute to clean that silverware before the big holiday. Take a little time now and it will be cleaned, polished and fresh for the holidays. There are a number of homemade silver cleaners that will do the job quickly and effectively. Here is a great one we use on the silver prior to the big Thanksgiving holiday:
How to Remove Tarnish from Silver

  1. Get a container that will hold all of your silverware. Don’t use a rubber container and don’t use rubber gloves with silver. It will corrode the metal.
  2. Pour several cups of white vinegar into the container, enough to cover the silverware.
Add 4 tablespoons of baking soda for each cup of white vinegar used.
  3. Stir the mixture.
  4. Place the silverware into the mixture.
  5. Let it sit for three hours.
  6. Remove the silverware and rinse in warm water until all of the vinegar and baking soda is removed from the surface. Then dry the silverware, polishing each piece to a beautiful shine. Use cotton flannel or diaper cloth to polish the silver.
