  • Blot the carpet with a clean towel or rag, but never rub a red wine stain in a carpet because it will cause the stain to be pushed deeper into the rug’s fibers.
  • After the stain is blotted almost dry, pour a cup of club soda and sprinkle it around the stain, then blot it.
  • If a substantial amount of wine has stained the carpet, continue the procedure, pour club soda into the stain, blot dry, never rub because you will push stain deeper.
  • Keep up the blotting/club soda procedure until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.
  • Treat the stain with salt or with baking soda. Either one will continue to absorb the moisture and the stain.
  • Once you make progress on the stain, pour a mixture dish soap and warm water and blot some more.
  • If the stain persists, go back to club soda and blotting, but this time add a small amount of hydrogen peroxide to the mix.
